Michael "Mike" Sauber
June 2, 1948 - February 7, 2022

Place of Birth: Minot, North Dakota
Residence: Palermo, North Dakota
Age: 73

Michael J Sauber, 73, of Palermo, ND, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 7, 2022 at Mountrail County Medical Center in Stanley, ND.

“Mike” was born on June 2, 1948 to Thomas and Gladys (Hemstad) Sauber in Minot, North Dakota. Mike was raised on the family farm south of Palermo. Mike attended country schools for 8 years and then attended Stanley high School and graduated with the class of 1966. Mike participated in football and wrestling. Along with sports, Mike was active in 4-H and Future Farmers of America. Mike attended North Dakota State University in Fargo and officially became a BISON. Mike returned to the family farm where he was a lifetime farmer and rancher. Mike continued to live on the family farm until his passing.
There was never a time when he wasn’t offering help to his neighbors…whatever the need was.

Mike was a 40-year member of the Blaisdell Rodeo Club where you could always find him behind the chutes helping and shouting “BULL.”

Mike’s compassion for the Stanley Blue Jays sport was his life. There was not a sporting event, be it football, wrestling, girls and boys basketball, volleyball, or track and cross country, that he did not miss. The athletes were very important to him. You could usually see him on the field after a football game shaking each players hand and saying “Good Job.” Mike earned the title of Stanley Blue Jays “#1 Fan (aka Stanley Blue Jays Biggest Fan!)

Mike is survived by brothers, Thomas, Jr. of Palermo and Joseph of Stanley; sisters, Mary Silvernail of Greenvalley, IL and Barbara (Alan) DeTienne of Parshall, ND; aunt, Nancy Hemstad of Stanley; 6 nieces, 1 nephew, and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by numerous Sauber and Hemstad cousins.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Patricia Mount.

I was tasked with starting a junior high football program in Stanley…..my first year as a teacher.
We had older equipment but the players were so enthusiastic. We ended practice each day with everybody’s favorite play….the Sauber Smash. Mike would move back to the fullback position, take a direct snap from center and barrel up the middle where the defenders tried to tackle him….it usually took at least three to bring him down and he would lead the laughing as everybody headed to the showers. It was a joy to work with him in class and on the sports fields….. I am not surprised that he became a great Blue Jay fan.

I am saddened to hear of Mike's passing. One of the last times we met was at our 50th class reunion. We both sat at the same table ,caught up on life and commented on how we often sat near each other in classes, as teacher's assigned seats alphabetically until names were learned. Mike will be missed, and remembered for his kindness and support to others. Prayers are offered to family and friends.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Mike. Mike was my (Jenny) cousin and we share the same birthday and love of the Bison. I always enjoyed time with Mike and his big smile. He used to always saddle up a horse for me to ride at their farm when I was a teenager. It was a highlight for me. Our thoughts, love and prayers go to Mary, Tom, Barb and Joe. He will be missed.
