Chester Hoover Johnson
October 27, 1929 - March 14, 2025

Place of Birth: Kerrick, MN
Residence: Stanley, ND, formerly of Palermo, ND
Age: 95

Chester Hoover Johnson was born on October 27th, 1929, in Kerrick, MN to Adolph Gus Johnson and Elsie Mae Robinson. At the age of 12, his family moved north of Palermo, ND, where he attended school until the completion of 8th grade.

Chester’s life took a fateful turn in Palermo when Florence Bruhn playfully threw a snowball at him, breaking his sunglasses. In that moment, he knew she was the one. That playful encounter blossomed into a life-long love, and the two were married on December 22, 1950, in Blaisdell, ND at the Bruhn family home.

Chester enlisted in the U.S Army in 1948 and was called to serve in 1950 during the Korean War, where he served as a medic on the front lines until 1952. His dedication and service to his country were a testament to his strength and commitment.

After returning home, Chester built a career with the railroad, working for over 40 years as a laborer, truck driver, and maintenance crew member. His meticulous attention to detail – especially when it came to his truck – carried over into all aspects of his life.
Together, Chester and Florence made their home in Palermo, ND, where they raised their 5 children and shared 70 wonderful years in their unique home within the community they loved most.

Chester will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his deep love for his family, and the countless memories he created with those who knew him.

He is survived by his children, Joann Ostdahl of Stanley, ND; Diann (Walt) Dunham of Palermo, ND; Chester Allen (Jill) Johnson of Stanley, ND; and Kevin (Darlene) Johnson of Minot, ND. He leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren. Chester is also survived by an abundance of nieces and nephews as well as his sisters-in-law, Darlene Bruhn, Martha Bruhn and Darlene (Dale) Ellis of Minot, ND.

Chester is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Florence Johnson and their beloved companion, Daisy; daughter, Tammy Hamers; sons-in-law, Brian Hamers and Arlan Ostdahl; grandson-in-law, Craig Skaar his parents, Adolph and Elsie; and siblings, Leonard, Lindfred, Betty, Marvena, Richard, Omar and Barb.

Chester was my uncle. He was a tease and so likeable. He was helpful and kind. I was 8 when he and Florence were married, so I have had the pleasure of knowing him for a long time. I will never forget him. His genuine interest in conversations with Jerry and I, when we would visit, was always apparent. He was a man who cared. He was special. I am unable to attend his funeral, but I wish to send condolences to his family.
