Gene Hueth was born in Glendive, MT on January 1, 1944, to Louella (Fischer) and Alvin Hueth. It was before prizes were given but he was proud to be the first baby born in the county that year!
The family grew with the addition of his sister, Karla, and they lived on a small farm in Stipek. They moved to Sidney when Gene was in 8th grade. He went on to play many sports in high school including running half back on the football team, a sprinter in track, and part of the basketball team which he claimed was rougher than football. Gene started working at Chad’s Furniture in high school. When he wasn’t working, you could find him riding his Harley to the local pool hall where he would run the table. He was passionate about auto mechanics from a young age building a dragster from scratch and testing it in quarter-mile races. He was young in the era of muscle cars and owned a green Chevy 409, a super-fast red Mustang, and then came his beloved 1965 blue Bonneville. He enjoyed spending time with his cousins camping, fishing, picking chokecherries and riding trail bikes all the way up into the mountains near Yellowstone Park.
As fate would have it, Gene met Arlene as she was beginning her teaching career in Sidney. He continued to work for Chad’s Furniture as a flooring craftsman and started his own business selling monuments. It was at this time that they met many of their lifelong friends. They were married in 1966 in Esmond, ND and welcomed three daughters: Holly, Heidi, and Misti. Gene was often found at Trenton showing the girls how to water ski and teaching many of their friends as well. He enjoyed testing new lures on fishing trips and hunting with his friends. Gene continued his love of mechanics and was the fix-it-and-flip-it guy when it came to cars. He could be found in the garage many nights building his own Christmas decorations and was known as the Clark Griswold of Sidney, winning many awards for his incredible Christmas displays. He would watch out the window as the cars would line up outside to see his decorations. Gene retired after celebrating his 50th year at Chad’s Furniture.
Gene was blessed with eight grandchildren. From attending their sporting events, teaching them how to fish, and playing endless games of Trash, he looked forward to every moment with them. Even though he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and fought it for more than 25 years, it didn’t take the fight out of him. On any particular day you could find him wearing multiple jerseys to cheer on all of the grandchildren playing sports.
Jesus took Gene’s hand on March 11, 2025, as he peacefully passed away at home.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Louella (Fischer) and Alvin Hueth.; and his stepfather Jim Fischer.
Surviving Gene is his wife of 58 years, Arlene; his three daughters, Holly Mischel of McMillan, MI, Heidi (Jay) Garmann of Red Lodge, MT, and Misti (Troy) Petrie of Parker, CO; sister Karla (Ross) Yates of Minot, ND; and his eight grandchildren Cody Mischel, Messina Garmann, Austin Mischel, Maycee Garmann, Calvin Garmann, Alex Petrie, Ty Mischel, and London Petrie.
Gene will be missed greatly at the family Shanghai table but his practical jokes and stories will never be forgotten.
