Doris Homer
June 23, 1936 - February 13, 2024

Residence: Wildrose, North Dakota

Doris Homer, 87, of Wildrose, North Dakota entered eternal rest on Tuesday, February 13th, 2024 at Tioga Hospital where she passed away peacefully in her sleep.

Doris May (Schilke) Homer was born June 23, 1936 in Wildrose, North Dakota to Theodore and Elsie (Woodside) Schilke. Doris was the eldest and only girl of five children. She grew up on the family farm eight miles north of Wildrose in Divide County.

Her education began at Highland School #3 attending rural grade school. She stayed at various homes in Wildrose while attending high school. She worked at Rood’s Roost Café in Wildrose, the summer of 1953, after school and weekends during her senior year of high school, and the summer of 1954. During the 1930’s Roods Roost building was a doctor’s office and hospital where Doris had been born. After she graduated from Wildrose High School in 1954 she attended Minot State Teachers College on a rural scholarship for one year between 1954 and 1955. After graduating she taught for two years between 1955 and 1957 at Highland #3, the same school she attended as a child. The school was only a half mile from the homestead where she grew up. She taught her two youngest brothers along with many of the other local children she knew.

Doris attended Missouri Synod Church until 1957 when she joined Grace Lutheran Church in Wildrose ND. She was a faithful member who enjoyed worship with the congregation. She taught Sunday school for many years and was part of the Women of Grace. She participated in many church activities throughout the years.

Doris married Charles Harris Homer on December 28th, 1956 in Minot, ND. To this union their son, Jess was born in 1960. In 1956 they built a home in Wildrose where they both continued to live until their passing. Doris actively helped Charles farm as well as handle all the finances.

Doris was an active member in Wildrose Senior Citizens for many years as well as Treasurer for 12 of those. She participated in their many events and especially had fun playing cards with her friends there. She also enjoyed texting and playing games on her smart phone and never missed Wheel of Fortune.

Gardening is one of the things she loved to do, although in her last few years she couldn’t get out to tend to her flowers as she would have liked. She was known for the beautiful flower garden around her house. The purple Iris was her favorite flower. She also had a large vegetable garden which fed the family and neighbors throughout the summer season. Many of her nieces and nephews have fond memories of picking fresh peas from her garden as well as candy shopping at Eva’s Store when it was open.

Doris loved getting together with her brothers and their families during the holidays. She would always bring her homemade buns as they were one of the family favorites. She loved meeting everyone at Lonnie’s Roadhouse in Williston on Thursdays for breakfast. Doris also enjoyed researching family genealogy and did extensive family histories for both sides of the family. Doris will be missed by all.

Doris is survived by her son, Jess of Wildrose, ND; brothers, Wesley (Linda) Schilke of Williston ND, Edward (Charlotte) Schilke of Watford City, ND and Mesa AZ, Larry (Sandy) Schilke of Williston, ND, and Wayne (Karen) Schilke of Rugby, ND; sister-in-law, Dolores McCord of Healdsburg, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Charles; parents, Theodore and Elsie; and brothers-in-law, James (Wanda) Homer, Francis Homer, and Gene Homer.

Sweet Doris, how we will miss you! Your homemade buns, we each had to wait our turn to get our dozen from you. They were always worth the wait. Your words of wisdom, your sense of humor, your kind eyes and beautiful smile. You were a blessing in my life and the lives of many. A life well lived.

To all of Doris’s family, our sympathy on the passing of Doris. She was such a friendly lady and always visited whenever we saw her. The last time was about a year and a half ago and she was so proud to tell us she was the oldest resident of Wildrose.
Rest in peace Doris.

Our sympathies to Jess and all the brothers and families. Oh my, we are going to miss Doris at breakfast at Lonnie’s. If anyone wanted to know who was related to who, they just asked Doris and she knew! She often corrected the brothers on details of some event from long ago and she was always right. She was a great lady and we will miss her.

My Aunt Doris was a true treasure! Her beautiful smile, joyful laugh & kindness to everyone was evident to anyone who knew her. Altho we weren’t able to be with her often, her bright mind & ability to understand our business issues were very important to our entire family! She did all of her tasks with joy & her dedication to her church & God were admirable. Jess said it well… She will be missed by all! Love… forever, Linda
