Duane W Johnson
July 22, 1935 - April 8, 2023

Residence: Lambert, Montana

Beloved father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend Duane W Johnson 87 of Lambert passed away peacefully Sunday, April 8, 2023, at the St Vincent Hospital in Billings. Interment has taken place.

Duane was born to Wallace and Helen Johnson on July 22, 1935, in Glasgow MT. He attended school in Glasgow, graduating in 1954 from Glasgow High School. In the summers while in high school Duane worked on what was referred to as “kid gangs” for the Great Northern Railroad. Following his graduation, he was hired full-time by Great Northern working out of Glasgow. He finished the last several years of his career with Burlington Northern as a conductor in Sidney, retiring in 1999 after about 45 years of railroad service.

Duane was formerly an active member of the Sidney Moose Club and enjoyed calling Bingo at the Ranger. He was a diehard Denver Bronco fan and longtime season ticket holder. He would drive to a Sunday game and be back in Sidney for work the next morning. After the passing of his wife Marie, Duane started to volunteer as a camp host at Fort Peck West End campground, a job he loved because of all the great people he met. He was the West End camp host for over 20 summers and enjoyed cooking, entertaining and visiting with anyone that stopped by and plenty of folks did. Duane was affectionately known as the “Mayor of Two Tarps” appropriately named because of the tarps he nailed to the shelter house walls to dampen the Fort Peck winds.

In November 1954 Duane married Marcia Tade. From that union came Mickie Simonson, Helena, Steve (Dana), Bozeman, and Wallace Dean “Dino” (Vickie), Gig Harbor. Duane married Marie “Myrt” Landin in April 1972 who had three sons, Tom, Jeff and Steve and dad raised them as his own. Together Duane and Marie had Kari (Louie), Lambert.

In addition to his parents, Duane was preceded in death by his wife Marie, son Steve, brother Don, brother-in-law David, grandson Adam and nephew Rocky. He is survived by his sister Diane, sister-in-law Bea, children Tom, Mickie, Steve (Dana), Dino (Vickie), Jeff, and Kari (Louie), 18 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren and beloved nieces and nephews.

Duane was a great father to all of us and treated everyone with the same respect and love. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and boasted about them to anyone that listened.

Mickie, Steve, Dino, Marcia, Diane and families,
We are so sorry for your loss! What a dear friend Duane and your family was/is to our family. All the years of being “Great Northern family” will hold a very special place in my heart for y’all. The trips to Blgs and Thermopolis after Dad was hurt will forever be embedded in my brain. Thank you for sharing him with us all these years. Love y’all!

Prayers to Duane's family...
Duane was such a joy; We got to know him during fantasy football at the Ranger. We would sporadically run into him here and there and he was never lost for words. Rest In Peace Duane...You dearly will be missed.

Duane's passing has left a void in the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. The summers at Fort Peck will never be the same. He was a great person, a wonderful friend, and the best cornhole partner I could ask for. I love you buddy. I will truly miss you till I see you again.
