July 30, 1948 - January 6, 2023

Place of Birth: Elbowoods, North Dakota
Residence: New Town, North Dakota
Age: 74

Opal Bird, 74, of New Town, North Dakota, passed away Friday, January 6, 2023, at St. Vincent Health Care in Billings, Montana.

Opal (Fox) Bird was born on July 30, 1948, in Stanley, ND to Julia (Bracklin) and Albert Fox. She was a member of the Dripping Dirt Clan and child of Knife Clan.
Opal Grew up in Mandaree, ND on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. She attended her school for years in Mandaree, ND. During her younger adult years, she travelled and resided in numerous states before making her permanent home in New Town, ND.

Opal was a very kind, generous, and caring person. She would do what she could for anybody who needed help. She also welcomed friends and relatives in her home whether it be to visit or maybe they needed a place to stay for a bit. She loved her family and was always checking to make sure everyone was doing okay. Opal also had a great love for her pets, especially her cat Nala, who was by her side for 22 years.

When Opal lived in “the brown house” you would most likely find her sitting at the kitchen table working on her crosswords and Sudoku. If it wasn’t that, she would be playing cards or dice. She enjoyed the company of her good friends and family and playing games at the table. More recently she enjoyed the games on her tablet. She also enjoyed the company of her grandkids, great grandkids and great-great granddaughter. She was excited to see the little ones when they’d come visit or she would be happy to hear the silly stories about them or their accomplishments. Opal had an especially close bond with her granddaughter, Callie Opal. They were best friends. You would see the two of them driving around town running errands with the pups sitting in the middle of them. Her grandkids Kinda, Dusty, Darius, Leticia, and Sophie were always hanging out, running errands, playing dice, or taking 2am phone calls “just to visit”.

Opal was so loved and will be missed dearly.

Opal is survived by her son Donovan Bird; 19 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Shawn Fox; Sons, Kendall Fox and Joel Bird; One brother and Nine sisters.
