Daniel “Dan” Ledahl, 44, of Grand Forks, formerly of rural Zahl, ND, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, MN surrounded by the love of his family.
Dan was born on September 26, 1981, in Williston, ND to Arlyn and Laurie (Peterson) Ledahl and was raised on the family farm near Zahl, ND where he developed the independent spirit and curiosity that would define his life. Dan graduated from Grenora High School with the class of 2000.
From a young age, Dan embraced life with enthusiasm, intelligence, and a deep sense of individuality. Music was one of his greatest passions, and he was an accomplished saxophone player. Faith also played an important role in his early years, and he developed a deep respect for Pastor Betty Czubay, whose guidance and encouragement left a lasting impression on his life.
Dan had a generous heart and a genuine desire to help others. He volunteered for three summers at Camp ReCreation in Richardton, ND, serving children with disabilities, and later volunteered at the Regional Youth Assessment Center in Grand Forks, ND, where his kindness and compassion positively impacted many young people.
Dan attended the University of North Dakota, where he proudly performed with UND’s Pride of the North Marching Band, traveling across the country to bowl games and playoff appearances. His years in Grand Forks also brought one of the most meaningful friendships of his life with Trisha (Otteson) Olson.
Later, Dan attended Mayville State University and worked in the university’s Sports Information Department. Throughout his career, he worked for Wells Fargo–Hillsboro, Kodiak Oil & Gas Company, and Sun Well Service. He also took great pride in serving for several years on the Williams County Fair Board, contributing his time and energy to his community.
One of Dan’s proudest accomplishments was earning his pilot’s license, a reflection of both his determination and adventurous spirit. He pursued his many passions with enthusiasm and curiosity, always eager to learn something new and immerse himself fully in each new interest.
Dan enjoyed a wide variety of interests throughout his life. He was an avid fan of Star Trek and even taught himself some Klingon simply for the fun of learning something new. He had a deep love for animals, especially cats, and shared a special bond with his beloved cat, Gus. Dan was also a devoted supporter of University of North Dakota football and hockey and enjoyed cheering on the Fighting Sioux (they would never be Hawks to him).
Dan is survived by parents, Arlyn and Laurie Ledahl; brothers, Jody (Shari) Ledahl and Matt (Amber) Ledahl; niece and nephews, Victoria (Tanner) Kimber, Alex Ledahl, Clayton (Emry Kleven) Ledahl, and Cutler (Josie) Ledahl; great-niece and great-nephew, Kennedy Kimber and Crew Kimber; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Wallace and Avona Peterson; paternal grandparents, Bruce and Shirley Ledahl; uncles, Reuben Hall and Daniel Schmidt; and his beloved cat, Gus.
Thank You
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Cardiovascular ICU staff at Abbott Northwestern Hospital for the compassionate and exceptional care they provided to Dan during his final days.
